
The countdown is on! In just 10 days, the Welsh Museums Festival kicks off, bringing together over 40 museums in a fantastic array of experiences across the length and breadth of Wales.
A whole host of bespoke events are on offer this year, which are being added each and every day to our events page.
With the festival kicking off 26 October, here’s a round-up of the exciting activities on offer.
Mid Wales
- Rhayader Timescape: the Rhayader Dragon Festival is back for the whole of half term. There are lots of activities taking place throughout the week for the whole family to enjoy.
- Ceredigion Museum: A series of unique workshops showcasing music and Calan Gaeaf stories. The animation workshop, for example, will help attendees craft captivating storyboards, bringing characters to life, while exploring various animation techniques.
North Wales
- Sir Henry Jones Museum: A range of workshops will be on offer, with two days of art workshops, led by Wendy Couling, to get families into the Halloween spirit – perfect for families looking to combine art with spooky fun.
- Greenfield Valley Museum: Don’t miss out on the terrifying trails, fancy dress, and spooky monster disco at Halloween Horrors—a sure hit for all ages!
- Penmaenmawr Museum: Follow the Legends and Lanterns Trail through the town and into the museum. You can also take part in a series of creative workshops and craft sessions.
- Oriel Môn: Local author Catrin Angharad will be sharing Welsh stories and songs during Hwyl y Gaeaf, offering a magical experience for one and all.
- Conwy Culture Centre: Families can enjoy two interactive workshops exploring Calan Gaeaf through dance and learning activities.
- Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum: History comes to life with re-enactments and children’s activities during the Soldiers Through the Ages event.
- Wrexham Museum: A family day filled with engaging activities and events for a memorable pop-up museum visit on Queen’s Square.
- Storiel Bangor: Y Pethau Bychain will present a special Calan Gaeaf session for young visitors.
- Yr Ysgwrn: Come along to events, where you can create scary nature masks inspired by the world of nature and Halloween.
West Wales
- Pembroke Dock Museum: Enjoy a family activity week with face painting, badge making, quizzes, and competitions. Don’t forget to dress up in period costume!
- The Egypt Centre: Can you solve puzzles and escape rooms using material from the Egyptian collections in this fun and educational workshop series?
- Glynn Vivian Museum: Phantoms & Phantasmagoria is a Halloween-themed light projection and shadow play event you won’t want to miss.
- Carmarthenshire, CofGar: Dylan Thomas Boathouse, Carmarthenshire Museum and Park Howard will all be hosting spooky storytelling, workshops, and craft activities—perfect for Halloween!
- Tenby Museum and Art Gallery: The Welsh Halloween party, Y Calan Gaeaf, will feature a mix of storytelling, events, and traditional activities.
- Dylan Thomas Centre: This drop-in family event will look at autumnal spells!
South Wales
- Torfaen Museum: Discover the magic of Welsh folklore with storytelling and art as we celebrate the first day of winter in Wales.
- Cyfarthfa: Follow the new Halloween trail and get creative with spooky crafts, with historical facts embedded in pumpkins and parsnips!
- Rhondda Heritage Park: Take part in a performance workshop hosted by Avant Cymru, where you can uncover the Celtic traditions of Halloween, while learning drama and performance skills.
With such a variety of events, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during this year’s Welsh Museums Festival.
Our Wales History Trails Passport Challenge will also be back, where families can have a chance to explore the history of Wales and win fantastic prizes. Also returning will be our special Halloween activity, which includes a free booklet written by children’s author Casia Wiliam, with games and puzzles.
